Kimberly and I took a spur of the moment trip to the Block Creek Bed and Breakfast located half way between Fredericksburg and Comfort, TX. I didn’t think I would be able to find anything at the last minute, but the gods were with us and this gem just kinda popped-up. The reviews were all four and five stars and it’s definitely deserved.
Our hosts, Sharron and Larry Jay, were wonderful and have, I would say, the best B&B in the Hill Country. If you are looking for peace and quiet to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this is the place. Be forewarned: there’s no cell reception, but they do provide limited WiFi. The beautiful cottage is over a hundred years old, but has been updated significantly. There’s a large pond on the property and several benches and chairs scattered around to sit and enjoy the out of doors.
It’s not terribly hard to get to and the hosts provide detailed driving instructions. Google Maps gets you close, but it’s off just a smidge. Getting to the B&B requires taking a 2 mile unpaved road off Old No. 9 Highway. (It’s not bad for an unpaved road.) They highly recommend you arrive during daylight hours, but once you’ve been there, it’s easy to find in the dark–and it REALLY gets dark!
You can head into Comfort or Fredericksburg for food, but Alamo Springs Cafe is just up the road. It was really busy when we went, but the food was worth the wait. The cheeseburger I got was huge!
We found out that photography groups often stay there due to the abundant wildlife. Luckily, I brought my camera gear and below is gallery of some of the wildlife I saw in our brief stay.
