Best birthday present: FCC wants anyone to be able to make a cablebox!

On February 18, 2016, my birthday, the FCC has this on their meeting agenda:

  • Expanding Consumer Choice:
The Commission will consider a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that seeks comment on a framework for providing innovators, device manufacturers and app developers the information they need to develop new technologies to access video content. (MB Docket No. 15-64)

Basically, the FCC wants anybody to be able to make a cable box. Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft, etc. must be dancing a jig since they will no longer need to bang their heads against the wall trying to make deals with content providers. They can just get to work on making awesome products!

Here’s an excellent summary of what this all may mean.

FYI, I will still be accepting birthday gifts despite the size of this one ;-)
